Melvyn F. Shapiro, M.D., Lillian M. Beard, M.D., Kathleen Kadow, M.D. and Susan Shults Scarlett, M.D. have been meeting the medical needs of thousands of infants, children, and adolescents (into young adulthood) in the greater Washington, DC (suburban Maryland and Virginia) metropolitan area for more than 95 combined professional years. Their patients and families, in many instances have become extended families.

Meet Our Providers

Melvyn F. Shapiro, MD - a native Pennsylvanian, is a graduate of Wesleyan University, University of Michigan Medical School, and the Yale University—New Haven pediatric training program. Following a stint in the United States Navy, Dr. Shapiro joined Doctors Stanley Steinberg and Murray Paul in their Silver Spring, MD pediatric practice in 1964; he also became a member of the Children’s Hospital of D.C. affiliated staff.  With the retirement of Dr. Steinberg in 1980, Dr. Aurora Perez combined her practice with Doctors Paul and Shapiro. During the 1980’s, Dr. Shapiro served two terms as Chair of Pediatrics at Holy Cross Hospital. Over his years in practice, Dr. Shapiro developed a special interest in the area of children’s allergies. In 1998 the practice of Doctors Shapiro and Perez became a part of Children’s Pediatricians and Associates. Dr. Melvyn Shapiro received a Forty Years of Service Award by Children’s National Health System in 2005 and has been honored by both Montgomery County Executives Douglas Duncan and Isaiah Leggett (Montgomery County, Maryland) for meritorious service, 2006 and 2007. An avid ice hockey, enthusiast and fair weather Redskins fan, in addition to practicing pediatrics, Dr. Shapiro enjoys traveling and being a doting grandfather of four.

Lillian M. Beard, MD - the physician leader of the team, wears many hats. A member of the Children’s National Health System’s attending staff since completing her residency in 1973, Dr. Beard  practiced in Northwest D.C. for 28 years before joining Doctors Shapiro and Perez in Silver Spring, MD in 2002. Dr. Beard has held numerous leadership positions with medical associations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Medical Association and the American Medical Women’s Association. Prior to joining CP&A, Lillian had completed three consecutive terms of service on the Children’s Hospital Board of Directors and served on the Board of Children’s National Medical Health Network. A native of Brooklyn, NY, and a Howard University alumna, Dr. Beard is known for her dedication to children’s comprehensive medical care and for educating today’s parents through all forms of media.  Dr. Beard has served as the medical expert / reporter with the ABC-TV 7 news team and as an editorial advisor to many publications, including AAP News. She currently is on the editorial advisory board for Very Best Kids and Pediatric News. Her articles have been published in Pediatrics, Journal of the National Medical Association, and Good Housekeeping magazine where as a contributing editor; she authored the monthly, “Ask Dr. Beard” column. Cited by President Bill Clinton in his 1993 Address To The Nation on Health Care Reform, Dr. Lillian Beard has been the recipient of numerous national awards and honors. One of the national spokespersons for the American Academy of Pediatrics, Lillian Beard, M.D., is also the author of “Salt In Your Sock And Other Tried-And-True Home Remedies”. 

Kathleen M. Kadow, MD - returned home to Maryland after practicing pediatrics in Norwalk, Connecticut. Dr. Kadow joined Doctors Shapiro and Beard, October 2006. Dr. Kadow received her MD from the University of Maryland. She completed her pediatric training at the Montefiore Medical Center (NY) and Children’s National Health System (DC). Kathleen also obtained a Masters of Public Health at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Dr. Kadow is bilingual (Spanish/English) and her special interests include nutrition, ADHD, community health, and her lovely  eight year old daughter, Ana.

Susan C. Shults-Scarlett, MD - joined Doctors Shapiro and Beard after having practiced more than 17 years in the DC metropolitan area.  Dr. Shults-Scarlett is a graduate of Spelman College, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed her pediatrics training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. A third generation District of Columbia native, Dr. Shults-Scarlett  is active in multiple community youth organizations and is very involved with the parent-teachers associations in the schools where her three children attend. Her special interests include the prevention of childhood obesity, improving childhood immunization rates, and ensuring that  parental concerns are met.

Greer S. Gavins, NP - is the newest member of our team at Children’s Pediatricians & Associates since May 2013. She relocated from New Orleans, LA. Greer comes to us with extensive experience in the underprivileged areas of New Orleans providing free health care to children via a mobile medical clinic. Mrs. Gavins received her undergraduate degree from Xavier University of LA in Biology/Premed and her nursing degree from Our Lady of the Lake College. She completed her family nurse practitioner training at Loyola University New Orleans. Her registered nurse experience prior to completing her nurse practitioner degree includes the well-baby nursery, postpartum and the neonatal intensive care unit. Mrs. Gavins and her southern charm bring a breath of fresh air to our office. Her special interests include caring for children and of all ages.
