Early Phone Hours: We heard your feedback and added earlier phone hours. Appointment lines for both Foggy Bottom and Capitol Hill are now open starting at 7:00 am Monday - Friday for scheduling same day sick appointments!
Saturday Morning Hours: Our Foggy Bottom location is open from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm on Saturday mornings for same day urgent visits. Our phone lines now open at 8:00 am on Saturday mornings so you can call directly for an appointment. Of course, if you're not sure you need an appointment or you just want advice, you can always reach our provider on call.

Meet Our Providers 

   Jamie Hedman, MD - attended the University of Notre Dame for her undergraduate education, and then went on to earn a medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed a pediatrics residency at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent in Indianapolis. Dr. Hedman spent four years working in both community pediatrics and caring for newborns in a neonatal intensive care unit in Indianapolis before joining Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) in fall of 2014. In addition to well child care, she has a particular interest in the management of asthma, eczema, and obesity. Dr. Hedman is currently accepting new patients of all ages. 

Dr. Hedman lives in Capitol Hill with her husband and busy toddler son and enjoys being involved in her local church. 
   Jennifer Kaplan, MD - completed her undergraduate studies in economics at Cornell University. She worked as an economic analyst prior to attending medical school at George Washington University. Dr. Kaplan finished her pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC in 2001. She has been a senior partner with Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) since 2002 and currently is the physician leader for the practice. She enjoys taking care of children from birth through adolescence. Outside of clinical medicine, her other interests in the practice include coding and teaching residents. 

Dr. Kaplan enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 children exploring the DC area, traveling, running, eating out at restaurants, going to Nationals games and rooting for the Steelers.
   Ellen O'Brien, MD - completed her undergraduate studies with a BA in Biology from Cornell University. She then completed medical school at Georgetown University and her pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center, where she trained as part of the Primary Care Track. Dr. O’Brien has been an Attending at Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) since 2011, where she sees patients from infancy through adolescence. Dr. O’Brien’s special interests include resident teaching and mentoring, and she leads a resident clinic once weekly. By far, her favorite part of pediatrics is her relationship with families. 

When not at work, she loves exercising, eating (!), and spending time with her husband, son, and dog.
   Judith “Judy” Ratner, MD – completed her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College. She received her Medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. Her residency in Pediatrics was at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as well as at Children’s National Medical Center. After residency, she completed a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Children’s. While Dr. Ratner enjoys seeing patients of all ages, she particularly likes practicing and teaching adolescent medicine. 

When not in the office, Dr. Ratner likes spending time with her husband, two adult children, and her wonderful golden retriever. Travelling, hiking, and swimming are also pastimes.
         Kristen Reese, MD - received a BS in Biology and Genetics from the University of Delaware and completed medical school at Jefferson in Philadelphia. She completed her pediatric residency in DC at Children's National Medical Center, where she trained at Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) in the Primary Care Track. She then completed a chief resident year at Children's National before joining the CP&A team in 2014. Dr. Reese enjoys caring for children from birth through adolescence. Special interests include infant care, obesity, and resident education. 

Dr. Reese and her husband live in DC and are expecting their first child in 2015. She enjoys running, cooking, exploring restaurants, and traveling.

Edward “Ed” Sepe, MD - completed his undergraduate education in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego with minors in Spanish and Political Science. He attended medical school at the UC San Francisco – UC Berkeley Joint Medical Program, during which he completed a thesis in tobacco control. He left California to complete his residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Sepe oversees the Primary Care Residents in our clinic and coordinates their training with the Children’s National Medical Center general pediatric residency program. He also serves as Chief Informatics Officer for Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A); a role where he manages optimization of our electronic health record along with ongoing training of providers.

Dr. Sepe lives in Washington, D.C. with his partner and daughter. He enjoys exercising, skiing, natural history, politics, and gardening.

   Rachel Shnider, MD - completed her undergraduate studies at Tufts University majoring in Clinical Psychology and Women’s Studies, followed by a post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at Goucher College. Dr. Shnider earned her MD from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed her pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in the Primary Care Track. She joined Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) in 2011. Dr. Shnider enjoys taking care of children from birth through adolescence, and particularly enjoys supporting new parents through their babies’ first year. She also is interested in international medicine and has spent time volunteering in Tanzania. Dr. Shnider is also involved in resident and medical student education within the practice. 

Outside of the office, Dr. Shnider enjoys chasing after her daughter and (very large) dog, exploring DC and it’s restaurants, traveling, and staying active.
   Soleak Sim, MD - joins Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) from Chicago where she spent 9 years working in community pediatrics. Before moving to Chicago, she worked in Cambodia for two years on a research study. She completed her pediatrics residency in the primary care track at the University of California San Francisco in 2002. She attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and did her undergraduate at Stanford University. 

Dr. Sim is accepting new patients from newborns to adolescents with special interest in the management of asthma and eczema. She also enjoys working with Spanish-speaking families. 

Outside of pediatrics, she is looking forward to trying out every great restaurant in the area with her husband and young daughter.

   Ellie Smith-Khuri, MD - received her MD from Columbia University. After completing medical school, she spent two years as a Fellow at the NIH, Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research, studying pediatric injury and environmental health. Dr. Smith-Khuri finished her pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC in 2006. She spent two years working in the Emergency Department at Children’s National before joining Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) in 2008. She has been a senior partner with CP&A since 2013. Dr. Smith-Khuri is active in medical education, serving as a weekly Continuity Clinic preceptor for medical residents and in curriculum development. Her other areas of interest include nutrition, injury prevention and environmental health. 

Dr. Smith-Khuri enjoys caring for children of all ages, from birth through adolescence.


Meagan Van Assche CPNP-PC - a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She received a bachelor of science in health sciences from James Madison University and a bachelor of science in nursing from Drexel University. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, Meagan has worked as a pediatric nurse in hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant. She is trained to care for children of all ages and has a special interest in asthma education, nutrition, research, and adolescent health. 

Jennifer Barrett CPNP-PC/AC- is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who graduated with BS in Biology and Nursing from UNC Chapel Hill. She then completed her Master’s Degree Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (Primary and Acute Care) from The Catholic University of America, where she received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Master’s Studies.  She has 8 years of hospital pediatric nursing experience prior to joining Children’s Pediatricians & Associates (CP&A) in 2014. Jennifer cares from newborns to adolescents. Her areas of interest include preventative medicine and respiratory illnesses (asthma and CF). Outside of the office, she enjoys spending time with her family, Zumba, rooting for Redskins or Tarheels, and traveling. 

                                                                                                    Laurie Banach, MD., received her B.A. in Psychology from Harvard and her medical degree from Columbia University. Dr. Banach completed her pediatric residency at Children’s National Health System in 2004. She has worked for Children’s ever since, both as a pediatric hospitalist and as a primary care provider for the Montgomery County School-Based Health Centers prior to joining Children's Pediatricians & Associates in 2017. She enjoys taking care of children from birth through adolescence. Dr. Banach lives in Bethesda with her husband and young son.                             
                                          Kristina Pyclik, MD 

 Jeannie Chang Pitter, M.D., completed undergraduate studies in human biology with a focus on women's health and a medical degree at Stanford University. She completed pediatric residency within the primary care track at University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine in 2004. Dr. Chang Pitter worked with Baylor College of Medicine in Kampala, Uganda in pediatric HIV prevention, care and treatment from 2004 to 2006. She then joined Children's National in 2007 as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at GW and provided care within Children’s Health Clinic, Healthy Generations teen-tot program and special immunology.

In 2009, Dr. Chang Pitter transferred within Children's National to CP&A Foggy Bottom where she cared for children and families, while also supporting medical education until 2014. Dr. Chang Pitter then moved to Cambodia for four years where she worked on a quality improvement and health professional development MCH project. She also practiced pediatrics part-time within the U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh, Department of State. Dr. Chang Pitter is happy to return to CNHS/GW, and looks forward to meeting your child and family at the CP&A Foggy Bottom and Capitol Hill locations. She has particular interests in travel medicine, health education, adolescent medicine and medical education.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Lena Baram, MD., was in private practice on Long Island, NY, for 16 years until her family relocated to Washington, D.C., in 2017. Dr. Baram is very excited to be part of the CP&A/Children's National Health System family.
